Step 2: Essay Report

Creative Multimedia is one of the largest industries in the world. Creative is referring to materials, imagery, or collateral prescriptively produced through creative and the creative process. It is about producing new things or new ideas basically in thinking, designing, developing and solving. We can define “Multimedia” as the media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. After defining these two words, we can conclude that Creative Multimedia is about producing new things or new ideas through different kind of media. This is why Creative Multimedia industry has the potential to create a lot of possibilities. Creative industries use multimedia for a variety of. We can achieve a lot of things through creative multimedia.

Through Creative Multimedia industries, we can discover our hidden talents. Most of the people in Creative Multimedia industries have their own talents. People who are talented in music industries can form their own band. For those who like to draw can draw their own Manga or their own concept art. We can share our skills, techniques and ideas with the people that have same interest with us. Therefore, we can improve ourselves to become better and better.

Another possibility that we can get through Creative Multimedia is having good attitude. These attitudes include hardworking, teamwork, willingness to learn and independent. Everyone plays an important role in their own team. A good teamwork will ensure that the job given will be done quickly and smoothly. Besides that, we must have willing to learn in order to exchange skills with each other. This will help us to create new and brilliant idea. Besides that, we must be independent and should not always depend on other people to solve our own problem.

In this industry, we can get a possibility to create good techniques and skills. Skills are needed in order to create a product or good outcomes are communication, generating ideas, presenting and invention. Good communication allows us to communicate well with our clients and avoid misunderstanding with our team members. Having the ability to generate good ideas can let us create a product that can deliver our message clearly to them. Presentation skills are also very important in Creative Multimedia. Being creative is important but we must also know how to promote and present our product to our client and audience.

This time, we are focusing on evolution of game design. When I was small, I still remember that I liked to play Super Mario arcade game with my cousin. Nowadays we keep on requiring better and better graphic. Therefore, games keep on evolve. From video game consoles first generation to seventh generation, from Game Boy to PlayStation Portable. Not only the graphics of the games improve, but the platforms also need to improve because the requirement of high performance for the graphic. That is why most of the gamers keep on upgrading their personal computers and gaming platform.

Compared to nowadays, the games of old days have simple settings. With better settings and storyline, the games are able to attract and create more gamers. According to NPD Group 2009 Gamer Segmentation Report dissects the US gaming market in depth, drawing on responses from nearly 21,000 people taken during a January survey. The study estimates the domestic numbers of gamers will increased by 4.3 million in 2008, going from 165.5 million to 169.9 million. This statistic shows that the number gamers keep on increasing from time to time.

The games nowadays always make the graphic as the main attraction to gamers. The graphic of the games becomes more and more realistic. Realistic graphics can improve the interaction between games and gamers. Gamers will fuse into the games. The most obvious evolution in games is Final Fantasy series. From Nintendo Entertainment System (Final Fantasy I) to PlayStation 3 (Final Fantasy XIII), we can see the improvement of the graphics of games, from 8-bit graphics to 3D graphics.

Interaction between games and gamers improves from time to time. Nowadays, there are second life games that can simulate our life into games. As an example, The Sims series is a strategic life-simulation computer games that allows players to have their second life on computer games. Besides that, online games can be a platform for gamers to interact with each other. They can have chatting while playing games together as long as they are online. Online games can become one of the communication tools between humans.

As the conclusion, the desire of human will keep pushing on the evolution of games. Better graphics and interaction shorten the relationship between games and gamers. Population of gamers will increase from time to time because of the improvement of games. One day, games will be a part of our life.

Step 5: Idea and Sketches

Here are the sketches for Final Assignment. Our group used the subject "Tree", "Clock", "Pixels" and "Stationery" for our "Evolution of Game Design" theme. We mostly use the popular game character "Super Mario" to represent game.

Tree - We found that tree is suitable to represent evolution because as the time goes, the tree grow older and stronger. As for the game designs, they become more mature and better interactivity as the time being. The whirl/ spiral of the tree trunk is best represent the time and age. And also we use tree root to show game designs evolve by accumulate experiences like how root absorbs nutrition from ground. Tree leaves will fall as they grow older; same goes for game designs, old/ outdated games will eventually be eliminated as the newer/ better games come in. But, without the old leaves, the tree won't grow stronger. We use this implication for our theme; Game designs become better and better with previous games as references, we learn mistakes and produce better game designs.

Clock - Clock represents time. Game Designs evolve as the time goes on. Time is a dimension we live in, a dimension that we can't run away from. Same goes for the game designs, they become more and more interactivity compare to olden days' of game designs. Interactivity develops a dimension for us to interact and communicate with the game itself and players as well, for example Virtual Reality. We believe in near future, game will be fully interactive and we humans can actually LIVES in games (as they have become another reality).

Pixels - Pixels is best represents image resolution and quality. The more pixels, the higher the resolution or quality for the game designs, and vice versa. Nowadays most of the game designs is rendered with high quality preferences in order to attract more game players. Of course players demand for better quality of game design in order for them to enjoy the best performance of games, to fulfill their satisfaction. We use pixels to show comparison of old games and new games. With the latest technology and information, industries can produce higher and higher quality of game designs, in other words, the game designs keep on evolving. We also used Rubik Cube in our composition because pixels in 3D is like a cube shape. Each side of Rubik Cube is to show varieties of game designs element and genre. In order to create more creative and attractive games, industries combine different elements or genre of games into one.

Stationery - Designs start from scratches of pencils in tons of papers. Without sketches, we can't come out any blue print or designs. That is why we used pencils, erasers, and papers to show evolution and revolution of game designs. Stationery also evolves as the time being. We used different ages of pencils and combine with different generation of game designs. Without previous designs, the games can't evolve into latest designs.

Improved version (FINAL):
We had chosen this composition as our final because it brings out what we want to express. By using the famous game character, Super Mario, which pass by many evolution since 1981 until now, people can easily understand it is about game. The boxes and cubes symbolize pixels that is the basic component of game graphics and quality. The two kids are playing video games. At first, the kids are playing 2D Super Mario game. As time passed by, the 3D Super Mario character is getting out of the 2D platform. They were shocked. In this artwork, we are trying to convey that the game design is evolving to be better and better according to time. People were impressed about the evolution of games design.
